Saas Fee can be found in southern Switzerland, 1800 metres up in the Swiss Alps.
Surrounding the village are no fewer than thirteen peaks each higher than 4000 metres and the town is close to the glaciers of the Dom and Allalinhorn. It’s location presents fantastic skiing opportunities all year round (Saas Fee itself has 22 ski runs) as well as plenty of opportunities in the summer months to climb neighbouring peaks such as the Weissmies, the Nadelhorn and the Lenzspitze.
Saas Fee - Town
Visiting Saas Fee is exactly like stepping back in time… There is a strict ‘no-car’ policy. The town - preferring to use small, electric vehicles - banned the use of motor cars when the road was laid in 1951. Today there are car parks on the outskirts of the town. All new houses are required to be built from at least 40% wood which explains how the town has retained it’s typical Swiss image.
Although famous for it’s ski slopes, Saas Fee offers many other activities and attractions. The town boasts a fantastic nightlife with restaurants and nightclubs as well as a sport and leisure complex and is also home to the highest underground funicular railway in the world as well as the highest revolving restaurant!
Saas Fee - Dining and Nightlife
Dining in Saas Fee is a pleasure as there are many fine restaurants to choose from.
By far the best place to eat out is Fletschhorn which in 2007 won the ‘Chef of the Year’ award. It is a 30 minute walk from Saas Fee town centre or a 10 minute taxi journey. Regarded as one of the best restaurants in Switzerland, the Fletschhorn books up quickly so do make reservations early (Telephone: +41 27 957 21 31). Meal prices vary between €85 and €115.
However there are more, less expensive, though good quality restaurants in and around Saas Fee.
Saas Fee’s nightlife is definitely worth a look-in. There are around 7 night clubs all with great music and a lively crowd. Après-Ski occurs fairly early on during the day, the sun starts to lower at around 3pm and at 4pm it has dropped below the mountain completely.
Other than skiing...
The sport and leisure complex is a definite must if you aren’t feeling up to tackling the slopes. It has a 25 metre, heated indoor swimming pool, an indoor tennis court, billiards, table tennis, a sauna, steam bath and exercise room.
Children
There are several different day nurseries/crèches which are available for guests to the town, all of which charge reasonable prices! An example being the day nursery Hohsi-Nest auf Kreuzboden which admits children from 2 years (Telephone:+41 27 958 15 81).
